High-End Instruments Laboratory

The High-End Instruments Laboratory was established in 2011 for the research and the detection of emerging contaminants. The Laboratory is intended for faculty and graduate students use only. Food is the major source of environmental pollutants accumulated in the human body. Once entering organisms, the pollutants can be found in the blood and internal organs. Therefore, it is crucial to analyze the concentration of pollutants in food and tissues. However, analyzing pollutants is not a simple task. If we analyze impurities with high concentration and the mixture of unknown composition such as fat and protein, the analysis requires complicated preparatory work and only sophisticated analytical instrument facilities can do the work. As a result, detecting and tracking environmental

pollutants needs further exploration. In order to be in the lead of this research area and increase competitiveness, the SHE Department set up the High-End Instruments Laboratory, which provides gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS), Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometer (LC/MS), and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Tandem mass spectrometer-gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC/MS/MS) will be added.
